Plus, we are offering gift certificates specifically for sewing classes. In the spirit of holiday gift giving, we are running a one day special on gift certificates to be used for sewing classes. Taking the Long Way Home

It is the rare occasion that I spend the day riding in the car with both of my parents, as I am 37 and they are divorced. Being reminded of fall Sunday afternoon drives, root beer, and pumpkin patches, today I got to ride in the back seat of my mom’s car while my mom made my dad tell stories of when I was little. I feel so fortunate to have this moment with them.

They are very hardworking and have encouraged me to dig deep and labor in my life doing the things that bring me the most happiness. They both wanted to ride along with me today when I went to see my dear friend Ginny who does long arm quilting for me when I’m overwhelmed. This moment seems right. It is slow, easy, and mindful as I drop off an armload of quilts that will end up in the hands of new friends that desire to pass along an heirloom of their worlds. My legacy is love. I love my job. I love my world. I am incredibly grateful.

Pattern Patti arrives in Downtown Indianapolis

A month ago I had the great pleasure of meeting a local gal (Danville, IN), Cindy Wright, who is the creator of Pattern Patti. Through my door came a spirited woman with an arm load of sewn goods too cute for words. Cindy is a pattern maker whose directions are concise, easy to follow, thorough, well written, illustrated, and just plain fun. Pattern Patti is a cute, current pattern outfit tailored toward young mothers, new sewists, and the crafty inclined. We are pleased to join forces with Pattern Patti and to offer several sewing classes taught by the pattern maker herself. Welcome aboard, Cindy! We like your style. We like your work. Crimson Tate & JabuAfrica

Fourteen years ago, I traveled to Kenya in East Africa with a handful of my dear college friends lending our hands to local businesses and families. What has remained constant with me from that journey is that the human spirit is the same wherever you go. Whether you are young, like I was at the time, twenty two years old, or whether you come from abundance or from little, we all desire camaraderie, kindness, and warmth, both physically and emotionally. I learned a lot that summer about how I wanted my life to be. I realized for the first time that my world really is rich and full of resource. I finally learned that with hard work, anything is possible.

Hard work was the constant lesson from which my parents fashioned the threads of who I am and that is the thread that carried me 8000 miles from home and was the same thread that was apparent in lives of the Kenyan families I met, lived with, and loved. We all hope and dream.

And so, you ask yourself, I love fabric. What does this have to do with me and my obsessions? New at Crimson Tate :: Modern Quilter are West African textiles that will make you very happy. Wax block printed, rich, and full of color, these fabrics are available by the yard and are waiting to be sewn into your own histories of life, love, work, and everything in between. That story will benefit a few of the neediest and dearest miles away.

Here’s the good stuff: 10% of the sales of these fabrics will benefit a local Indianapolis non-for-profit called JabuAfrica. Sarah Castor and her husband Dave have adopted three boys from three different orphanages in three different countries of Africa. 10% of the funds raised from the purchase of these African textiles will go to JabuAfrica which will distribute monies to support those organizations. She is my dear friend from college, one of the dear friends that went with Kenya that summer of 1996 that changed our lives, and since she has started JabuAfrica. The mission is to lend financial and emotional support to grassroots organizations caring for orphans in the countries of her children’s birth. It makes me cry each time I think of it. I love that my friends, quilters and sewists of Indianapolis, can support Sarah in her mission to make the lives of her boys’ families and communities better.

Free Fat Quarter and the Long Weekend

So, sometimes when you really love sewing people around you love to share their sewing experiences which is one of the best parts of my job. I love hearing about grannys who sew and about grannys whose grannys taught them to sew. I love eight year olds who make sock dresses for their babies. I love thirteen year olds who show off their messenger bags and are beaming at the recognition of their efforts. I love the 60 year old who is majorly obsessed with fabric and often just NEEDS all three yards for no particular project, just to fuel the obsession. I love it all. And with this story telling sometimes comes laughter and giddiness. Sometimes it brings pride and deep breaths. And sometimes it recalls a remembering of those who no longer sew, whatever the circumstance may be.

It was through those conversations that a family, after their mother had since passed, bestowed a gaggle of fabric that they “just wanted to be put to good use.” This was some time ago that I received boxes of a fellow quilters things in honor of their seamstress who they loved so dearly. I put that fabric to good use and it never was a somber occasion. It always brought smiles and loveliness because a gift of fabric brings a desire to do something great with it.

Well, in honor of fabric passed from one sewist to another, all Labor Day weekend long I am giving away fabric that was given to me by another craft maker who just couldn’t bare the burden of so much fabric.

This fabric is ultra cute! It’s different from other fibers found at Crimson Tate :: Modern Quilter, but is supa fun, nonetheless. What do you have to do to get it this free fat quarter?!
